A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. • 15% of all TMI files use the same file format, which have the signature TMD. They consist of unreadable binary data. The average file size is 51 KB with most files being between 26 KB and 91 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. BASE4, EXTNH and unnamed. Files like these are sometimes connected to video.

The remaining 50% of all TMI files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. Record and ObjectType.
