All about TOUR Files
The TOUR file type is primarily associated with LKH.
What is a TOUR file?
For many files, the data represents a Traveling Salesperson Problem (TSP) tour – a sequence of stops produced by optimization algorithms such as those implemented in LKH. These files record the order of locations to visit for the best route.
Some TOUR files come from gaming, for example from Subnautica. In this context, they contain predefined routes that the game uses for navigation.
A smaller group of TOUR files is used in software development. They are formatted in JSON and act as guided tours in Visual Studio Code, helping users step through code sections.
How to open a TOUR file
You need a suitable software like LKH to open a TOUR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TOUR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TOUR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert TOUR files:
- LKH
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. TOUR files are often referred to as LKH data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Vadosity Toolkit (Tour) by Vadosity Inc.A Tour file contains all the data in a Vadosity Virtual Navigation Tour.
TOUR file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the TOUR files looks like this:
TOUR is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 55% of all TOUR files use the same file format, which have the signature NAME. The content also consists of readable text fragments, which can be viewed with the help of a text editor. Most of these files are 170 bytes to 1 KB in size. The file type was used 20 years ago. The keywords TOUR_SECTION, TYPE : TOUR, COMMENT, DIMENSION : 280 and NAME : ./TSPLIB/a280.tsp.optbc.tour are typical for these files. A usual file name is a280.opt.tour or att48.opt.tour. Files like these have the following tags: berlin, solucion and bays.
- 30% of all TOUR files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "50 01 00 00" at the beginning. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. A typical file size is 12 KB. A common filename is grandreef.tour or allbiomes.tour. Such TOUR files store data about arcticspiresbike, credits and crystalcave.
All the rest of the TOUR files (15%) have different formats. You can get all the details of your TOUR file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .tour file to analyze" above.
Technical Data for TOUR File Extension
a tour data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with TOUR files
- Associate the TOUR file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest TOUR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available LKH update.
- To make sure that your TOUR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .TOUR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
