All about VHDL Files
The VHDL file type is primarily associated with Quartus.
What is a VHDL file?
How can I open a VHDL file?
You need a suitable software like Quartus to open a VHDL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VHDL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VHDL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert VHDL files:
- Quartus by Intel
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. VHDL files are often referred to as Quartus developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- ModelSim (hardware design script) by SiemensModelSim is an electronic design automation software with a high-end hardware simulation kernel that supports VHDL and Verilog. Hardware design scripts written in VHDL are saved in VHD files. This file format is classified as Developer. Related links: VHDL
- Vivado (hardware design script) by XilinxVivado is an integrated hardware design and simulation environment. It uses VHSIC Hardware Description Language to model/simulate the hardware of a digital system. This file format is classified as Developer. Related links: VHDL
VHDL format details:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the VHDL files:
VHDL is not a commonly used file extension and predominantly uses a uniform format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 65% of all VHDL files start with the magic bytes library , which are always the first bytes of this file format. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The files are often between 290 bytes and 1 KB in size. The file type is relatively new. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as use IEEE.STD_LOGIC_1164.ALL;, library IEEE;, entity, use IEEE.NUMERIC_STD.ALL;, Port (, 15 downto 0, STD_LOGIC_VECTOR(15 downto, in STD_LOGIC_VECTOR, out STD_LOGIC_VECTOR and architecture. A usual file name is backdoor.vhdl or key.vhdl. Such files are related to encryption.
- 15% of all VHDL files belong to VHSIC Hardware Description Language. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are on average 3 KB in size and range from 400 bytes to 15 KB. The keywords entity, library ieee;, use ieee.std_logic_1164.all; and port are typical for these files.
The remaining 20% of all VHDL files are files with no common format, such as LIBRARY. Files like these are sometimes linked to counter. You can get all the details of your VHDL file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .vhdl file to analyze" above.
Technical Data for VHDL File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\jGRASP\bin\jgrasp.exe
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\Dxp.exe
a vhdl hardware design script is a special file format by Intel and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with VHDL files
- Associate the VHDL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open hardware design scripts. Because only the current version supports the latest VHDL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Intel manufacturer website after an available Quartus update.
- To make sure that your VHDL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .VHDL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
