All about VPX Files
The VPX file type is primarily associated with Visual Pinball X.
What is a VPX file
This file is most often a Visual Pinball table file that uses an Microsoft Compound format. It stores simulation data such as table layout, physics settings, and related assets. You should use Visual Pinball X to open and run these files. For more details on this usage, visit VPForums.
Additionally, some VPX files work as Avaya setup packages. In this role they are known as InstallAware Virtual Packages and contain configuration data for telecommunications systems.
Another variant is the Avast patch file, which holds antivirus update data including virus definitions. This type is linked with Avast Antivirus; further information is available at Avast.

VPX file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the VPX files:
VPX is rarely used as a file extension and includes different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in VPX files:
- 50% of all VPX files utilize the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. Microsoft Compound File is a complex container format used by some versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows-centric applications. It has features similar to those of a filesystem format. Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏࡱá (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). The file contains several sections with names like GameStg and TableInfo. The files are 2 MB to 150 MB in size, with a median of 36 MB. It is a modern file type. These files can be linked to bally, space, stern, cadet, calibration and sega, and have often person-related content.
- 20% of all VPX files start with the magic bytes ASWsetup, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The file size is in the range of 340 bytes to 11 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. ASWsetupFPkgFile. The file name prod-pgm.vpx or servers.def.vpx is typical for these files. Files like these have the following tags: prod.
All other VPX files (30%) have no consistent format, often e.g. VPX1 video, XML and HLEN. Tagged as info. If you want to find out what your VPX file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for VPX File Extension
