What is a WKS file?

WKS files mostly belong to XLISP by David Betz. A WKS file is a spreadsheet created by the spreadsheet processor in Works productivity software suite. This file is saved in Compound Document Format or a proprietary format only used by Works. WKS is also the filename extension of a spreadsheet created by VP-Planner Plus, AS-EASY-AS, and 1-2-3 spreadsheet processors. Another type of WKS file is a worksheet created by DeskMate graphical user interface shell and productivity software suite. XLISP programming environment and language saves a workspace in a WKS file. Works, VP-Planner Plus, AS-EASY-AS, 1-2-3, and XLISP are all discontinued.

How to open a WKS file

You need a suitable software like XLISP to open a WKS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To view or edit WKS files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. WKS is not a common file extension and covers different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
