What is a WMS file

WMS files mostly belong to GeoServer by Open Source Geospatial Foundation. WMS is the extension associated with a Windows Media Skin definition file. The WMS format is used by the Windows Media Player, which is a media player and media library software developed for the Windows operating system. Windows Media Player has now been discontinued. The WMS file stores a skin that is used to modify the appearance of the Windows Media Player interface. The software contains preinstalled skins and custom skins can also be created. WMS files are in the XML format and can be opened and edited in any text editor. They define the elements that are present in a skin, as well as their relationships and functionality. WMS files are created by a script creator, which also creates any associated JavaScript (JS) files that incorporate the graphical elements and add functionality to the skin. WMZ files are compressed ZIP archives that store WMS files, associated JS files, and graphic files used by the skin.

How to open a WMS file

You need a suitable software like GeoServer to open a WMS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your WMS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a WMS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

How to solve problems with WMS files

  • Associate the WMS file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open web map service files. Because only the current version supports the latest WMS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Open Source Geospatial Foundation manufacturer website after an available GeoServer update.
  • To make sure that your WMS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .WMS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
