Opening XC Files
The XC file type is primarily associated with Notepad++.
What is an XC file
It performs different roles depending on its origin. For example:
- XVM configuration: A UTF-8 text file that stores system parameters for device management (modXVM).
- Compressed data format: Contains compressed settings for printer control, known as the eXtended Package Configuration used by Xerox Printer Control.
- Game data configuration: Holds game settings used in development environments like Xcode (Xcode) and supported by Unity.
- ControlNet configuration: Used in industrial PLC programs for system control such as those associated with RSLogix 5000 (Rockwell Automation).
FilExt.com tip: Depending on its purpose, the file may be plain text or contain compressed data. You can open text-based XC files with a plain text editor, while compressed versions need specialized software.
How do you open XC files?
You need a suitable software like Notepad++ to open an XC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert XC files:
- Notepad++
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. XC files are often referred to as Notepad++ settings because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- X Server Constant Screen ImageThis file format is classified as Graphic.
XC file format:
To view or edit XC files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below is our analysis of the XC files:
The XC file extension is rather rarely used and includes different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 45% of all XC files are based on the popular UTF-8 file format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). The content consists of binary data as well as text and words. The file size is in the range of 890 bytes to 20 KB. It is a modern file type. The file name xvm.xc or sounds.xc is characteristic of these files. Files like these are about battle, carousel, players, colors, labels, panel, markers, results, camera, hangar and normal.
- 15% of all XC files have the same signature XPCK. They consist of unreadable binary data. XC files can be up to 520 KB in size, but are often around 25 KB - 350 KB. The keywords XPCK are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are c20180601_p10.xc or c101.xc.
The remaining 40% of all XC files are files with no common format, frequently e.g. Source and JSON. These files are often connected to templates or dead. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your XC file!

an xc configuration file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with XC files
- Associate the XC file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open configuration files. Because only the current version supports the latest XC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Notepad++ update.
- To make sure that your XC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .XC file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
