What is a XIM file?

XIM files mostly belong to Varian VMS.

Overview: XIM files are not a single standard type. They serve different purposes based on the source application.

• Radiotherapy Imaging: These files may store medical images used for radiotherapy. In many cases the file comes from Varian Medical Systems and is known as an Elekta Synergy radiotherapy image. For more details, visit Varian Medical Systems.
• Firmware Data: Other XIM files contain firmware details such as configurations for GPS devices. They are used with Teltonika systems via the FMB Configuration Tool.
• 3D CAD Models: Some XIM files act as a container for 3D CAD model data. These files can use a ZIP structure and are produced by tools like XIMTOOL.
• X-ray or X-Plane Images: A few files include image data from X-ray or flight simulation environments. These are also handled by programs such as XIMTOOL or XnViewMP.

How to open a XIM file

You need a suitable software like Varian VMS to open a XIM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XIM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XIM file directly in the browser:. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the XIM files is as follows:

The XIM file extension is not widely used. Such a file covers different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in XIM files:

• 45% of all XIM files start with the magic bytes 00 56 4D 53 2E 58 49 00, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. XIM files can be up to 4 MB in size, but are often around 990 KB - 2 MB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. VMS.XI. The file name Proj_00000.xim or 00000.xim is typical for these files. These files are often associated with beam, check, center, images, xfff and profile.
• 35% of all XIM files have the same signature TLTF. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 2 MB in size and range from 1 MB to 2 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: TLTF. The file name FMB.Ver.2020-06-01.Rev.00.e.xim or FMB.Ver.2020-06-01.Rev.01.e.xim is typical for these files.
