XPO file extension format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the XPO files comes to the following conclusion:
The XPO file type mainly uses a special format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 90% of all XPO files are associated with Microsoft Dynamics AX Export files, which internally utilize the well-known UTF-8 format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. A typical file size is 91 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The keywords Element, Exportfile for AOT version 1.0 or later, Formatversion: 1, Microsoft Dynamics and unloaded are typical for these files. These files can be linked to project, shared, table, class, task, update, private, invent and form.
- 4% of all XPO files are based on the well-known GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are often between 3 KB and 47 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. OmEgArEaSeArChExPoRtFoRmAt5.1. Such files are related to export.
All other XPO files (6%) have no uniform format. Often described as ssrsreport, order, type, integration, report, product or sales. If you want to find out which format your XPO file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .xpo file to view".

How to solve problems with XPO files
- Associate the XPO file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open text-based export files. Because only the current version supports the latest XPO file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Dynamics AX update.
- To make sure that your XPO file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
