All about ACE Files
The ACE file type is primarily associated with WinRAR.
What is an ACE file?
- Proprietary nature: Created by Marcel Lemke and bought by e-merge, ACE uses a proprietary compression algorithm. This means that eACE files can only be compressed using WinAce. However, e-merge has released a decompression library named unace.dll, through which any third-party application can open ACE archives. The ACE format uses 160-bit Blowfish encryption.
- Issues: ACE has been used to send malware via e-mail, and the format is no longer maintained by its developers, so it is advised to not open an unknown ACE archive.
Other Uses:ACE is the data exchange format used by the AceDB bioinformatics database. In this case, it is a text file. The extension is also associated with Jupiter Ace, a home computer from the early 1980s. The format linked to Jupiter Ace is a memory dump, or snapshot, format. Microsoft Train Simulator uses an extension named ACE as a texture file for the game.
How to open an ACE file
You need a suitable software like WinRAR to open an ACE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ACE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ACE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

It was created by Jean Thierry-Mieg and Richard Durbin for the C.elegans genome project, but has been used widely in bioinformatics applications since. ACE is the data exchange format that AceDB databases are based on. BioPerl, a set of open source bioinformatics tools, also uses ACE files. This file format is classified as Database. ACE file format details:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the ACE files:
The ACE file type is a very commonly used file extension and includes different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 55% of all ACE files have the same signature SIMISA@. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are often between 45 KB and 2 MB in size. This is an old file type which is rarely used today. The following keywords are characteristic: SIMISA@F. Files like these have the following tags: shimmns, front, deccan, hadgs, queen, zsskc, gatx and loco.
- 35% of all ACE files have the same signature 00 00 00. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The file size is in the range of 100 KB to 190 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. **ACE** and UNREGISTERED VERSION. Files like these are about purchase, order, prtti, album, document, invoice, potions, scrolls, photos and best, and often include person-related information.
All other ACE files (10%) have different formats, the following 5 formats can be found: Jupiter Ace snapshot, RAR and ACE. These files are often connected to fixed, mega, asterix, english, madness, payment, rfront, class, daadk, kbps, tucd or xmpr. If you want to find out which format your ACE file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .ace file to view this image".

an ace compressed archive file is a special file format by WinRar and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with ACE files
- Associate the ACE file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open compressed archive files. Because only the current version supports the latest ACE file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the WinRar manufacturer website after an available WinRAR update.
- To make sure that your ACE file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ACE file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
