All about ACL Files
The ACL file type is primarily associated with setfacl.
What is an ACL file?
How to open an ACL file
You need a suitable software like setfacl to open an ACL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ACL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ACL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ACL file extension format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the ACL files produces the following result:
The ACL extension is quite commonly used. The file itself covers different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in ACL files are:
- 60% of all ACL files have the same signature 04 01 96 00. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are on average 37 KB in size and range from 13 KB to 45 KB. The file type is very old but is also used today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as abbout, about, abotu, abouta and about a. MSO1033.acl or MSO0127.acl is a typical file name.
- 10% of all ACL files belong to Office AutoCorrect List. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 30 bytes with most files being between 30 bytes and 36 bytes in size. Examples of file names are MSO1031.acl or MSO1046.acl.
The remaining 30% of all ACL files are files with no common format, often e.g. XML, UTF-16 (LE), UTF-8 and ACL. The category is auto, save, raidenftpd, arabic, backup or mssp. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your ACL file!

How to solve problems with ACL files
- Associate the ACL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open access control lists. Because only the current version supports the latest ACL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the setfacl Developers manufacturer website after an available setfacl update.
- To make sure that your ACL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ACL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
