Opening ADML Files
The ADML file type is primarily associated with Group Policy Editor.
What is an ADML file?
These files work hand in hand with ADMX files by holding the localized text (such as descriptions, display names, and help content) that appears in the Group Policy tools.

How to open an ADML file
You need a suitable software like Group Policy Editor to open an ADML file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ADML file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ADML file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert ADML files:
- Group Policy Editor
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. ADML files are often referred to as Group Policy Editor settings because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Windows/Office (Language Specific Group Policy Settings) by Microsoft CorporationMicrosoft Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 introduce a new format for displaying registry-based policy settings. Registry-based policy settings (located under the Administrative Templates category in the Group Policy Object Editor) are defined using a standards-based, XML file format known as ADMX files. These new files replace ADM files, which used their own markup language. ADML files are XML-based ADM files that contain language-specific settings. ADML file format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. In the following you will find our evaluation of the ADML files:
The ADML file extension mainly uses a defined ADML format. The file formats most commonly found in ADML files are:
- 70% of all ADML files are associated with Group Policy Language-Specific Administrative Template files, which internally utilize the well-known XML format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. ADML files can be up to 540 KB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 80 KB. The file type is very old but is also used today. The keywords <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>, <policyDefinitionResources xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-i, <!-- (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation -->, revision and schemaVersion are typical for these files. The following filename is common: chromeos.adml or firefox.adml. These files can be linked to windows, google, citrix, guide, base, desktop, policy, group and inet.
- 15% of all ADML files internally utilize the XML file format. Most of these files are 4 KB to 140 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>, <policyDefinitionResources revision="1.0" schemaVersion="1.0">, <resources>, <description></description>, <displayName></displayName>, <stringTable and http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema. The file name receiver.adml is typical for these files.
The remaining 15% of all ADML files are files with no common format. Files like these are sometimes linked to drive, update, installer, passport, control, display, access, legacy or panel. If you want to find out what your ADML file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
