Opening an AES File
The AES file type is primarily associated with AES Crypt.
What is an AES file
- Usage: AES stands for Advanced Encryption Standard and is a specification established by the National Institute of Standards and Technology(NIST) in 2001. Developed by Joan Daemen and Vincent Rijmen, it is one of the most popular algorithms which uses symmetric keys for encrypting and decrypting data. AES Crypt software uses this algorithm to securely encrypt files using 256-bit encryption. The encrypted file now has the same file name except for the new AES suffix. The original file is retained and a copy of the encrypted file is created as most users tend to encrypt their data for the purpose of safe transfer over social media. Hence, they like to retain a copy of the original. It is alright to delete the original file provided one has the password available with them at all times to decrypt it when needed.
- Adoption: Data can be encrypted into AES file format and decrypted back from the same format using AES Crypt software that can be run on Windows, Mac, and Linux environments. The command-line interface can also be used on these three operating systems for achieving the same. PHP, Java, and C# developers can use dedicated libraries for encoding and decoding data. All support concerning various platforms is available on the official AES Crypt website.
How can I open an AES file?
You need a suitable software like AES Crypt to open an AES file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your AES file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a AES file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert AES files:
- AES Crypt by Packetizer
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. AES files are often referred to as AES Crypt encodeds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- After Effects (stablilzer settings file) by AdobeAfter Effects is an application for visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing by Adobe, commonly used in the post-production phase of films and videos. The AES file format stores stabilizer settings for After Effects. This file format is classified as Settings. Related links: After Effects on Wikipedia, After Effects User Guide
- ooVoo (activity log file) by ooVooooVoo is a free, cross-platform video chat, voice calling, and messaging application. The AES file format stores a log file created by ooVoo. It is used to record ooVoo activity and is sent to the developers when debugging is needed. ooVoo uses the AES extension for macOS and the OVOLOG extension for Windows. AES file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the AES files is as follows:
The AES file type is a very commonly used file extension and is used by different programs with different formats. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 30% of all AES files are associated with AES Crypt encrypted data. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are often between 490 bytes and 10 MB in size. It is a modern file type. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as aescrypt and CREATED_BY. Files like these are about crypt, msgstore, duplicati, docx, save, dblock, xlsx and report.
- 15% of all AES files have the same signature Salted__. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. AES files are between 1 KB and 5 MB in size. The keywords Salted__ are typical for these files. An example of a file name is MPL_syslog.aes. These files are often associated with export, syslog, logs, capture, packet and pcap.
The remaining 55% of all AES files are files with no common format, the following 5 formats can be found: ZIP and FsdGVkX. These files are often connected to details, case, support, mbhd, tech or data. If you want to find out which format your AES file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .aes file to analyze".
Technical Data for AES File Extension
an aes encrypted file is a special file format by Packetizer and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with AES files
- Associate the AES file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open encrypted files. Because only the current version supports the latest AES file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Packetizer manufacturer website after an available AES Crypt update.
- To make sure that your AES file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .AES file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
