What is an ALAC file?

ALAC files mostly belong to iTunes by Apple. ALAC (short for Apple Lossless) is an open source audio compression format developed by Apple. Audio data compressed using ALAC is usually stored in M4A or CAF audio container files which you can play with iTunes and apple devices such as iPods. Despite using compression to reduce file size, ALAC codec does not reduce audio quality. The lossless designation means that it can produce bit-perfect reconstructions of original data from compressed data. Audio compressed using ALAC takes about half the storage space of its uncompressed counterpart. It achieves this level of compression by using linear predictive coding. ALAC remained proprietary technology until late 2011 when Apple made the codec open-source. Its source code is publicly available under an Apache 2.0 license. Developers can use, change and distribute ALAC-compressed audio without having to pay royalties.
