Opening an APX File
The APX file type is primarily associated with PhotoPaint.
What is an APX file?
How can I open an APX file?
You need a suitable software like PhotoPaint to open an APX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your APX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a APX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

APX format details:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below you will find our evaluation of the APX files:
The APX file extension is used very often and includes very many different file formats. But the following two file formats are common:
- 15% of all APX files utilize the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏࡱá (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). The file contains several sections which are named like Contents, Embedding 1, PenList, Plot and TagLegend. The file size is in the range of 9 KB to 18 KB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Files like these are sometimes connected to trend and filter.
- 15% of all APX files store the data in the EXE file format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. A typical file size is 730 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: !This program cannot be run in DOS mode. The following filename is common: ArchiCADToLumionBridge.apx or Param-O.apx. Such files are related to archi, frame, reinforcement and plus.
The remaining 70% of all APX files are different files with different signatures, frequently e.g. ArcPad preferences, Ability Office PhotoPaint bitmap, ZIP, MXPaint and APX. Sometimes used for license, author, expert, finder, swing or trade. If you want to find out which format your APX file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .apx file to view this image".
