What is an APX file?

APX files mostly belong to PhotoPaint by Ability. Files with APX filename extension are usually bitmap image files created with Photopaint Studio, a raster graphics editor developed by Ability. ArcPad, a GIS mapping and data collection software saves its extensions' preferences (settings) in APX files written in XML format. This file may be used to define how extensions are loaded, which ones are enabled, as well as the codename, filter types and other properties of each extension. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. 15% of all APX files store the data in the EXE file format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. A typical file size is 730 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: !This program cannot be run in DOS mode. The following filename is common: ArchiCADToLumionBridge.apx or Param-O.apx.
