AWS file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the AWS files:
AWS is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type is used by different programs with different formats. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 60% of all AWS files use the Microsoft Compound File format, known also as OLE2 Compound Document format or Composite Document File format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. Header signature for the CFB format with 8-byte Hex value D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). The app name of an AWS file is Ability Spreadsheet or MacroModuleCollectio. The CLSID (class identifier of a Windows component object) is dd388b21-9cf4-11d3-a49e-0020af44316c or edb57aa0-f724-11ce-8bff-00608cf67596. The file contains several sections which are named like Contents, Spreadsheet, SummaryInformation, MacroModuleCollection, Objects, Workbook, DGS, DocumentSummaryInformation, Pivots and MacroForms. The files are 16 KB to 600 KB in size, with a median of 75 KB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Files like these are about template, sales, sheet, accounts, income and ebay.
- 10% of all AWS files are using the well-known XML file format to store the data. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The files are on average 250 bytes in size and range from 100 bytes to 380 bytes. The files contain the following words: AVRWorkspace, CurrentRegisters, IOSettings, Files, part name, ATMEGA, File00000 Name, Position and LineCol.
The remaining 30% of all AWS files are files with no common format, the following 5 formats exist: Ariane WorkSpace, AppleWin Saved State and gameworld. These files are often connected to fixed or project. If you want to find out which format your AWS file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .aws file to analyze".
