What is a BMS file?

BMS files mostly belong to QuickBMS by Luigi Auriemma. BMS (Be-Music Source) file format is mainly associated with rhythm action games and was first used as a format specific for the simulator game BeatMania by KONAMI.

• Main Use: BMS is the acronym for Be-Music source. BeatMania is a console-based rhythm video game in which a player pressing a correct sequence of keys while notes drop down from the screen top towards the judge line. As the player keeps presses the right notes at the appropriate time, a gauge fills up and when he misses notes, the gauge drains out. BMS file contains the details of the note arrangement of a soundtrack along with the intended game responses as the player presses the right or wrong notes. BMS file is in a plain text file with each directive line beginning with the # character. It consists of a header field and the main data field. The header field consists of game information such as player name, song genre, song bpm, and gameplay level. The main field data contains a unique code related to the number of the measure, channel, and components of the measure.
• Other Uses: BMS files are also used as for encryption by Nation Technologies' BIOWRAP System software. BIOWRAP System is used for biometric authentication of electronic files. A BMS file with the user's credentials is proof for biometric stamping done by the author using the BIOWRAP Writer tool. This tool enables the author to generate safely authenticated electronic files containing their biometric identity information namely, username, password, and fingerprint. The BMS files can be using BIOWRAP Reader application or through the official website after authorization.

How do you open BMS files?

You need a suitable software like QuickBMS to open a BMS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your BMS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a BMS file directly in the browser:. All other BMS files (40%) have no consistent format, such as SilkRoad mesh and HEADER.
