What is a BRS file?

BRS files mostly belong to Roku Developer. BRS files can serve different purposes depending on the context. In many cases they are BrightScript source code files used on Roku devices. These files contain code that is interpreted by Roku’s platform to run streaming channels. You can open these files with a basic text editor or with tools provided in the Roku development kit.

How to open BRS files

You need a suitable software like Roku Developer to open a BRS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. BRS is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type covers different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:

• 20% of all BRS files start with the bytes Library ", which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. A typical file size is 1 MB. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. The keywords Sub Main(), Library "autoplugins.brs", autorunVersion, 'region Main, sysFlags, debugParams = EnableDebugging() and customAutorunVersion$ = "7.8.0" are typical for these files. autorun.brs or main.brs is a typical file name.
• 10% of all BRS files store the data in the UTF-8 file format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes  (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are often between 140 bytes and 120 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. ' Do not edit this script - it is created programmatically and any changes you make will be overwritten the next time you publish a schedule. Some examples of file names are autoplugins.brs.
