What is a BTR file?

BTR files mostly belong to WMI by Microsoft. A BTR file is a repository index used by Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), the Windows implementation of Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM). This file is named INDEX.BTR. It is located in the \Windows\System32\wbem\Repository folder. A BTR file is also a database created with Btrieve transactional database management software. It contains structured data organized into tables and indexes. A Btrieve database can be used to generate reports. BTR is also the filename extension of a butterfly database used by AviSys bird-watching software.

How to open BTR files

You need a suitable software like WMI to open a BTR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. The files are 320 bytes to 5 KB in size, with a median of 5 KB. Examples of file names are deptodoc.btr or doctodep.btr. Such BTR files store data about linkinfo and wwwroot.
