Opening CDR Files
The CDR file type is primarily associated with CorelDRAW.
What is a CDR file?
How can I open a CDR file?
You need a suitable software like CorelDRAW to open a CDR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CDR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CDR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

CDR file format details:
To view or edit CDR files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the CDR files is as follows:
CDR is a very widely used file extension. The file type includes different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 55% of all CDR files use the ZIP algorithm, multiple files are compressed and combined into one CDR file. A CDR file includes 7 to 26 files. File names are e.g. links.xml, mimetype, \META-INF\container.xml, \META-INF\links.xml, \META-INF\metadata.xml, \META-INF\textinfo.xml, \color\color.xml, \color\docPalette.xml, \color\profiles\, \color\profiles\rgb\srgb color space profile.icm, \content\dataFileList.dat, \content\data\data1.dat, \content\root.dat and \styles\. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. CDR files are between 54 KB and 20 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: content, mimetypeapplication/x-vnd.corel.zcf.draw.document+zipPK and data. These files are often associated with logo, backup, card, seeklogo, banner, design, vector and plakat.
- 40% of all CDR files are CorelDraw Document files, which are based on the RIFF file format. RIFF files store data in tagged chunks. There are primarily used to store multimedia such as sound and video. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. CDR files can be up to 900 MB in size, but are often around 19 KB - 16 MB. The keywords RIFF and DISP,( are typical for these files. These files are often associated with curve, laser, free, cover, data, riff and image.
All other CDR files (5%) have no consistent format, the following 3 formats exist: CNSLINK. These files are often connected to corel, sticker, template, seite, name, business, visiting, board, cards, flyer, front, hindi, print, book or flex. a cdr drawing is a special file format by Corel and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with CDR files
- Associate the CDR file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open drawings. Because only the current version supports the latest CDR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Corel manufacturer website after an available CorelDRAW update.
- To make sure that your CDR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CDR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
