Opening CHA Files
The CHA file type is primarily associated with OTMaster.
What is a CHA file?
How to open a CHA file
You need a suitable software like OTMaster to open a CHA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CHA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CHA file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

CHA format details:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the CHA files looks like this:
The CHA file extension is used very often and covers different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 65% of all CHA files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "@UTF8" at the beginning. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The file size is in the range of 620 bytes to 61 KB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as @UTF8, @Begin, @Languages, @Participants, @PID, Child and Investigator. Examples of file names are 20180601.cha. Files like these have the following tags: export, excon, nites, freq, output, coded and clan.
- 7% of all CHA files start with the bytes @Font: crucial for this file format. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The files are on average 4 KB in size and range from 1 KB to 12 KB. The files contain the following words: @Font, @Begin, Investigator, @Participants, Win95:Courier:-13:0, Filename, Subject, Stim, female, @UTF8 and fre.
All other CHA files (28%) have different formats, frequently e.g. cHMIP and idf. Tagged as challenge, settings, purple, buff, jugg or lion. If you want to find out which format your CHA file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .cha file to analyze".

a cha character layout is a special file format by Dutch Type Library and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with CHA files
- Associate the CHA file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open character layouts. Because only the current version supports the latest CHA file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Dutch Type Library manufacturer website after an available OTMaster update.
- To make sure that your CHA file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CHA file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
