What is a CIT file

CIT files mostly belong to XnView by XnSoft. CIT is the filename extension of raster images created with MicroStation, a 2D/3D CAD design software mainly used for infrastructure design. CIT files often contain vector maps created with SeeYou online flight planning and navigation tool. BibExcel, a bibliography data analysis software saves some data in CIT files. CIT filename extension is also associated with Intergraph Raster, the raster graphics file format used by Intergraph's geospatial products. These CIT files contain CCIT Group 4 compressed bitmap images and they are typically scanned or created by design tools developed by Intergraph (now Hexagon). XnView may be used to view CIT image files. ChessBase, a client software for analysing historic chess games stored in ChessBase database, saves the ChessBase index in a CIT file.

How do you open CIT files?

You need a suitable software like XnView to open a CIT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CIT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CIT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

CIT file format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the CIT files looks like this:

You will often come across the CIT file type. This is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The two most common formats are as follows:

The remaining 9% of all CIT files are different files with different signatures, the following 5 formats exist: TIFF and ZIP. Files like these are sometimes linked to scan. You can get all the details of your CIT file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .cit file to view this image" above.

How to solve problems with CIT files

  • Associate the CIT file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open images. Because only the current version supports the latest CIT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the XnSoft manufacturer website after an available XnView update.
  • To make sure that your CIT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .CIT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
