Opening a CIT File
The CIT file type is primarily associated with XnView.
What is a CIT file
How do you open CIT files?
You need a suitable software like XnView to open a CIT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CIT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CIT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

CIT file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the CIT files looks like this:
You will often come across the CIT file type. This is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 90% of all CIT files belong to Intergraph Raster bitmap. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 170 KB with most files being between 33 KB and 410 KB in size. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. These files are often associated with fmbrus, voznica, fuel, tank, ulvb, arizona, petro, slovenskepravno, supports, ofccap and prof.
- 1% of all CIT files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This general-purpose file format provides a file-system-like structure within a file for the storage of arbitrary, application-specific streams of data. Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are on average 9 KB in size and range from 5 KB to 93 KB. The following filename is common: PROJECT.CIT.
The remaining 9% of all CIT files are different files with different signatures, the following 5 formats exist: TIFF and ZIP. Files like these are sometimes linked to scan. You can get all the details of your CIT file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .cit file to view this image" above.

How to solve problems with CIT files
- Associate the CIT file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open images. Because only the current version supports the latest CIT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the XnSoft manufacturer website after an available XnView update.
- To make sure that your CIT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CIT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
