What is a CMAP file

CMAP files mostly belong to CmapTools. The CMAP file is mainly used to store concept maps created by CmapTools. It holds data that connects ideas with nodes and links in a diagram format. The file can be saved as a compressed archive (ZIP) containing XML data, or as a JPG image that shows the diagram.
There is also a less common use where a CMAP file acts as a character map for fonts, helping to map characters to their corresponding glyphs in Adobe Illustrator.
  • Concept Mapping: Contains structured data for diagrams of ideas.
  • Font Mapping: Provides character-to-glyph mapping for graphic design.
  • For proper viewing, use CmapTools for concept maps or Adobe Illustrator for the character map version. More details can be found at the CmapTools website.
FilExt.com tip: Be cautious when editing these files manually, as modifying internal data (especially in ZIP-compressed files) may corrupt the mapping structure.

    CMAP file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below you will find our evaluation of the CMAP files:

An CMAP file includes various formats for various programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

All other CMAP files (30%) have different formats, such as Adobe CMaps and Java. Often described as conceptual. If you want to find out which format your CMAP file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .cmap file to analyze".
