Opening an XCM File
The XCM file type is primarily associated with XCsoar.
What is an XCM file?
For instance, one form is a GIS map file used with XCsoar. In this case the file is a ZIP archive that holds map and navigation data. More details are available at XCsoar.
Another form is an XML-based file that stores Nokia network configuration details for Nokia NSP. Visit Nokia Networks for more information.
There are also versions used for medical purposes. In these files the format holds Holter monitor data used in systems like CardioSoft Holter System, CardioExplorer, or Mortara X-Scribe. Users needing to view cardiac data should use the dedicated medical software recommended by their provider, with further details sometimes found from GE Healthcare.
A smaller type of XCM file follows a markup language used in the redlining process with raster images. This version is referenced by Rasterex; more details can be found at Rasterex.
FilExt.com tips: The purpose of any given XCM file depends on its internal format. If it starts with ZIP markers you may be looking at a compressed map file, while an XML header indicates configuration or markup data. Identifying the internal structure is key to choosing the right tool for opening and viewing it.
How to open XCM files
You need a suitable software like XCsoar to open an XCM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XCM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XCM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert XCM files:
- XCsoar
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. XCM files are often referred to as XCsoar gis because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- CmapTools (Exported Concept Map) by IHMCIHMC = Institute for the Interdisciplinary Study of Human & Machine Cognition. Concept maps represent organized knowledge, graphically and textually captured and displayed in CmapTools. This file format is classified as XML.
XCM file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the XCM files looks like this:
The XCM file extension is rather rarely used and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 35% of all XCM files internally use the ZIP format, the XCM file contains a number of compressed files. 28 to 65 compressed files with names like city_area.dbf, city_area.prj, city_area.qix, city_area.shp, city_area.shx, city_point.dbf, city_point.prj, city_point.qix, city_point.shp, city_point.shx, info.txt, railway_line.dbf, railway_line.prj, railway_line.qix, railway_line.shp, railway_line.shx and roadbig_l are common. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. The files are on average 15 MB in size and range from 130 KB to 52 MB. The keywords info.txtU are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are UK_HighRes.xcm. These files are often associated with high and alps.
- 10% of all XCM files start with the bytes 161 crucial for this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are 380 KB to 12 MB in size, with a median of 10 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Holter.
All other XCM files (55%) have no consistent format, often, for example, XML and Rasterex. The category is snapshot. Just click the "Choose your .xcm file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your XCM file is.
Technical Data for XCM File Extension

an xcm map file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with XCM files
- Associate the XCM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open map files. Because only the current version supports the latest XCM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available XCsoar update.
- To make sure that your XCM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
