What is a CNS file?

CNS files mostly belong to M.U.G.E.N. CNS files are used in specialized systems to store configuration data. In their most common form, they are M.U.G.E.N character configuration files that define a fighter's properties, moves, animations, and state settings. These files are text‐based and often encoded in UTF-8, which makes them easy to inspect and modify using a plain text editor.
Usage examples include:

CNC Program Data: Some CNS files are created by Okuma OSP and contain instructions for CNC machines.

CAD/Network Settings: A few files are compressed (using ZIP) and used in Siemens NX CAD for network configurations.

Segmentation Data: Occasionally, the extension is used for copy number segmentation files in research settings.

How to open CNS files

You need a suitable software like M.U.G.E.N to open a CNS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Files like these are sometimes connected to minotaur and taokaka.

All other CNS files (56%) have no uniform format, frequently e.g. ZIP, UTF-8, Data, State, PBU, Var and Sample.
