Opening a DCT File
The DCT file type is primarily associated with Stata.
What is a DCT file?
How to open a DCT file
You need a suitable software like Stata to open a DCT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DCT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DCT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert DCT files:
- Stata by StataCorp
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. DCT files are often referred to as Stata data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

DCT file extension format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the DCT files:
The DCT file type includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 7% of all DCT files start with the bytes dictionary crucial for this file format. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. DCT files are between 630 bytes and 50 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: _column, dictionary using and file. Files like these are sometimes connected to pitstop, stata and edited.
- 6% of all DCT files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "DICT" at the beginning. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. DCT files can be up to 530 KB in size, but are often around 10 KB - 520 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. DICT and zQA%. Files like these are sometimes connected to english.
All other DCT files (87%) have no consistent format, frequently e.g. WPSpell Dictionary, DeSmuME, infi and SDB. These files sometimes refer to meta, europe, arab, dictation, data, indonesia, central, dbuser, dctfwd, south or west. If you want to find out which format your DCT file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .dct file to analyze".

a dct dictionary is a special file format by StataCorp and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with DCT files
- Associate the DCT file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open dictionarys. Because only the current version supports the latest DCT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the StataCorp manufacturer website after an available Stata update.
- To make sure that your DCT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DCT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
