All about DEX Files
The DEX file type is primarily associated with Excel.
What is a DEX file?
- Main Use: DEX stands for Dalvik Executable file and is named as such as they are interpreted by the Dalvik virtual machine. Dalvik is a part of Google Android OS and is used for running compatible applications. DEX files can either be generated manually or automatically via the compilation of Java programs. Several DEX files are packaged together into one single APK file, that serves as the final executable installer file for the application. Each APK file consists of a single DEX file with the name classes.dex DEX which references the classes utilized in the application.
- Other Uses: DEX files are also used by the Microsoft Excel program to store data formatted in cells across rows and columns. DEX files are also utilized as disc label projects by the Disketch label design applications. It saves the layout data for a CD/DVD and includes text and imported images. These DEX disc labels can be printed using a printer capable of supporting disc labels. DEXIS Digital X-ray software uses DEX files as the proprietary file format to store X-ray image information such as dental images and dental radiographs, in a digital format.
How to open DEX files
You need a suitable software like Excel to open a DEX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DEX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DEX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

DEX file format:
To find out what program is needed to open DEX files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the DEX files comes to the following conclusion:
DEX is one of the most common file extensions and uses a uniform format that many programs support. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 75% of all DEX files are associated with Dalvik Dex class. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. Most of these files are 160 KB to 8 MB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. The following filename is common: classes.dex or classes2.dex. Files like these are about audience, network, assets, hook, webapk, addex, icon, activity, fragment, custom and pack.
- 20% of all DEX files are using the well-known TIFF file format to store the data. TIFF is short for Tagged Image File Format. It stores raster graphics images that support color depths from 1 to 24-bit, lossy and lossless compression and multiple layers and pages. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 110 KB in size and range from 75 KB to 560 KB. Such files are related to ruchi and tillo.
All other DEX files (5%) have different formats, the following 6 formats can be found: ELF and ZIP. Sometimes used for sealed, resources, system, data, aimbot or base. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your DEX file!
Technical Data for DEX File Extension
a dex data exchange format file is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with DEX files
- Associate the DEX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data exchange format files. Because only the current version supports the latest DEX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Excel update.
- To make sure that your DEX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DEX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
