What is a DRS file?
How do you open DRS files?
You need a suitable software like Age of Empires II to open a DRS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DRS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DRS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

DRS format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the DRS files is as follows:
The DRS file type is a very commonly used file extension and includes different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 40% of all DRS files are Ensemble Studios Data Resource files. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The average file size is 26 MB with most files being between 530 KB and 93 MB in size. The file type is very old but is also used today. The following keywords are characteristic: 1.00tribe, Copyright (c) 1997 Ensemble Studios and plsL. Examples of file names are graphics.drs or sounds.drs. Files like these are about gamedata, interfac, terrain, border and sound.
- 15% of all DRS files save the data in config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. DRS files can be up to 15 KB in size, but are often around 2.3 KB - 2.6 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Type=Driver Configuration File, [Barcodes], [FileInfo], Kind=0, StripTrailingSpaces=1, UseHeight=1, [BARFONT0], JoinMode=2, Height=160, BarcodeNum=4, Name=EAN 13, Expansion=1, Printer Type=201 and Printer Type=203. These files are often associated with zebra, settings, printer, setting, bixolon, label and print.
All other DRS files (45%) have no consistent format, such as Flash, ZIP, SQL and JSON. Sometimes used for result, scan, decoder, session, imes, pdms or unit. If you want to find out what your DRS file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with DRS files
- Associate the DRS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest DRS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Age of Empires II update.
- To make sure that your DRS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
