Opening a DSN File
The DSN file type is primarily associated with ODBC Data Source Administrator.
What is a DSN file
How do you open DSN files?
You need a suitable software like ODBC Data Source Administrator to open a DSN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DSN file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DSN file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert DSN files:
- ODBC Data Source Administrator by Microsoft
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. DSN files are often referred to as ODBC Data Source Administrator settings because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- CD Stomper Pro (data) by StompCD Stomper Pro is a computer program for authoring/printing CD and DVD labels. It uses a DSN file to store some kind of data. This file format is classified as Data.
- Object System Designer
- Office Labeler (label document) by SureThingOffice Labeler is a Windows-based program for designing and printing labels. It saves a label document in a DSN file. This file format is classified as Data.
- OrCAD (circuit schematic design) by CadenceOrCAD is a schematic capture and electronic schematic design software for Windows desktop. It saves a circuit schematic design in a DSN file. This file format is classified as CAD.
- Proteus Capture (schematic design) by LabcenterProteus Capture is a printed circuit board design, simulation, and schematic capture program. A schematic design created with Proteus Capture is saved in a DSN file. This file format is classified as CAD.
DSN file format details:
To find out what program is needed to open DSN files, you need to determine the file format. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the DSN files is as follows:
DSN is a very common file type and includes various formats for various programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 35% of all DSN files belong to ISIS Schematic. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. DSN files can be up to 2 MB in size, but are often around 60 KB - 140 KB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The keywords ISIS SCHEMATIC FILE, DS kjh\ kjdg\, plate and y Design are typical for these files. The file name ROOT.DSN is characteristic of these files. These files can be linked to simulation, arduino, counting, proteus, kybwq, dzuo, traffic, circuit, clock, meter and using.
- 35% of all DSN files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Compound document files are used to structure the contents of a document in the file. It is possible to divide the data into several streams, and to store these streams in different places in the file. In this way compound document files support a complete file system inside the file, the streams are like files in a real file system, and the sections are like subdirectories. The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. Sections and streams in the file are named Cache, Cells, Graphics, Library, Packages, Parts, Symbols, Views, Cells Directory, ExportBlocks, ExportBlocks Directory, Graphics Directory, Packages Directory, Parts Directory, Symbols Directory, Views Directory, AdminData, HSObjects, DsnStream and NetBundleMapData. The files are on average 470 KB in size and range from 42 KB to 3 MB. Files like these are sometimes connected to board, interface, schematic, design, power, sensor and card.
All the rest of the DSN files (30%) have different formats, often, for example, Microsoft ODBC Data Source, SPECCTRA Design, Source, XML, Begin and Mode. Files like these are sometimes linked to control, tutorial, diagram, label, reva, sharable, counter, digital, display, prepaid, project, access, energy, schema, based, light or revc. You can get all the details of your DSN file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .dsn file to analyze" above.

a dsn data source name is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with DSN files
- Associate the DSN file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data source names. Because only the current version supports the latest DSN file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available ODBC Data Source Administrator update.
- To make sure that your DSN file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DSN file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
