Opening an EDN File

The EDN file type is primarily associated with Logseq.

EDNFile Extension EDN
File extension: EDN
File type:  plain text file

What is an EDN file

EDN files mostly belong to Logseq. An EDN file, or Extensible Data Notation file, stores structured information in a plain text format that follows Clojure style.
EDN uses a syntax with lists, maps, and vectors that is both human‐readable and easy for tools to parse.
  • Clojure Data Format: Used by Logseq for storing notes, configuration, and other data.
  • Datascript Database: Serves as a storage format for Clojure-based databases, as seen in projects using Datascript.
  • EDIF Variant: Employed in electronic design, it is part of the file handling in PCB design software from Mentor Graphics, with details available at Siemens EDA.
  • FilExt.com note: This format’s design allows it to represent simple to complex data, with support for custom tagged literals in user-defined types.

    How to open EDN files

You need a suitable software like Logseq to open an EDN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EDN file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EDN file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert EDN files:

    1. Logseq
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. EDN files are often referred to as Logseq data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
    2. Acrobat (Document) by Adobe Systems Incorporated
Adobe Acrobat is a family of computer programs developed by Adobe Systems, designed to view, create, manipulate and manage files in Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF). Some software in the family are commercial, and some are free. Adobe Reader (formerly Acrobat Reader) is available as a no-charge download from Adobe's Web site, and allows the viewing and printing of PDF files. Acrobat and Reader are widely used as a way to present information with a fixed layout similar to a paper publication. Program ID is AcroExch.Document
    3. EDIF
EDIF stands for Electronic Design Interchange Format, and has been predominantly used as a neutral format in which to store Electronic netlists and schematics. (Xilinx ISE FPGA Compiler) The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 28 65 64 69 66 20, ASCII: (edif. Related links: EDIF Wikipedia Page

    EDN file format:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our examination of the EDN files comes to the following conclusion:

EDN is rarely used as a file extension and includes different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in EDN files:

All other EDN files (50%) have different formats, often, for example, EDIF Netlist and edif. Tagged as schema, ruleset, config or world. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your EDN file!

an edn plain text file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with EDN files

    • Associate the EDN file extension with the correct application.
    • Update your software that should actually open plain text files. Because only the current version supports the latest EDN file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Logseq update.
    • To make sure that your EDN file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
    • Click here to open your .EDN file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
