What is an XFDF file?

XFDF files mostly belong to Adobe Acrobat Reader. XFDF files are XML Forms Data Format files that store form data used in PDF documents.
They contain XML markup which maps PDF form fields to corresponding data values. This file format is designed for handling submissions and updates for PDF forms.

Usage: To capture and exchange data from interactive PDF forms.

How to open an XFDF file

You need a suitable software like Adobe Acrobat Reader to open an XFDF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XFDF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XFDF file directly in the browser:. XFDF file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the XFDF files:

The XFDF file extension is rarely used and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

65% of all XFDF files are XML Forms Data Format files, which are using the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. XFDF files can be up to 700 KB in size, but are often around 290 bytes - 62 KB. The file type is a fairly new file format. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, <xfdf xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/xfdf/" xml:space="preserve", f href and fields. Such XFDF files store data about data, form and sign.
30% of all XFDF files store the data in the XML file format. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. Most of these files are 1 KB to 1 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, <ids original="7A7D61BCD522D4566EEC624E31B56, <xfdf xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/xfdf/"> and <f href="https://portal.arise.com/PdfTemplates/f1099msc19.pdf" />. Examples of file names are f1099msc.xfdf.

How to solve problems with XFDF files

Associate the XFDF file extension with the correct application.
