Opening an ELF File

The ELF file type is primarily associated with Linux.

ELFFile Extension ELF
File extension: ELF
File type:  executable

What is an ELF file?

ELF files mostly belong to Linux by Linux Foundation. An ELF file is an executable program, object code, core dump, or shared library saved in Executable and Linkable Format. Although it has cross-platform support, ELF format usually contains an executable to be used in UNIX-like environments such as Linux. Game consoles such as PlayStation Portable and Wii use game disc images, data, and executables saved in the same type of ELF files. Game console emulators can mount and execute such files. Another type of ELF file contains a log created by EurekaLog application activity logger.

How can I open an ELF file?

You need a suitable software like Linux to open an ELF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ELF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ELF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

  5. Download the converted file.

Programs that open and convert ELF files:

  1. Linux by Linux Foundation
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. ELF files are often referred to as Linux executables because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Electronic Application Form (form) by Microsoft
Electronic Application Form is a discontinued Windows program for creating, editing, and reviewing application forms. A form created with this program is saved in an ELF file. This file format is classified as Data.
  3. Eurekalog (log) by Neos Eureka
Eurekalog is a desktop program for logging and deploying applications. A log created by Eurekalog is saved in an ELF file. This file format is classified as Data.
  4. Playstation Portable (game executable/image) by Sony
PlayStation Portable is a handheld video game console developed by Sony. Disk images of video games built for PlayStation Portable are saved in ELF files when extracted from the physical disc. This file format is classified as Disk Image.
  5. Samsung HMX-F90 (firmware upgrade) by Samsung
Samsung HMX-F90 is a battery-powered digital camera recorder. Its firmware updates are distributed as ELF files which can be loaded over USB and installed from the on-board software. This file format is classified as System.
  6. TaskLink (executable) by Data IO
TaskLink is a discontinued process control software used to automate user tasks. It uses executables saved in ELF files. This file format is classified as Executable.
  7. Wii (game disc image) by Nintendo
Wii is a discontinued home video game console released as part of Nintendo's seventh generation of game consoles. Disk images extracted from Wii video game discs are saved in ELF files. This file format is classified as Disk Image. Related links: WiiBrew Homebrew Wiki
  8. WinImages (extended layer) by Black Belt Systems
WinImages is a discontinued raster graphics editor with 74 layer modes and a texture generation engine. It uses an ELF file to save the extended layer of a project. This file format is classified as Raster Image.

ELF file format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the ELF files is as follows:

The ELF file extension is very common and uses a well-defined format that can be read by many programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

All other ELF files (9%) have different formats, such as EurekaLog log, ZIP, ELE, ELF and DQp. Tagged as xsight, program, dumper, snes, chall or launcher. If you want to find out which format your ELF file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .elf file to view".

an elf executable is a special file format by Linux Foundation and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with ELF files

  • Associate the ELF file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open executables. Because only the current version supports the latest ELF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Linux Foundation manufacturer website after an available Linux update.
  • To make sure that your ELF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .ELF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
