What is an EMF file?

EMF files mostly belong to Office by Microsoft. EMF filename extension is mainly associated with images saved in Windows Enhanced Metafile format. EMF image files usually store graphical information as a sequence of record structures written as object definitions and commands. The format is based on Windows Metafile (WMF) format. However, it has a different structure and uses a different set of command optcodes. Later versions of EMF image format supports raster graphics. If pixel data is present in such EMF files, their color data is stored using RGBA values. You can create, view, and edit an EMF image with Office programs, Illustrator, XnView, Draw, or CorelDRAW. How to open EMF files

You need a suitable software like Office to open an EMF file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file.
