What is an EMF file?

EMF files mostly belong to Office by Microsoft. EMF filename extension is mainly associated with images saved in Windows Enhanced Metafile format. EMF image files usually store graphical information as a sequence of record structures written as object definitions and commands. The format is based on Windows Metafile (WMF) format. However, it has a different structure and uses a different set of command optcodes. Later versions of EMF image format supports raster graphics. If pixel data is present in such EMF files, their color data is stored using RGBA values. You can create, view, and edit an EMF image with Office programs, Illustrator, XnView, Draw, or CorelDRAW. EMF is also the filename extension of files containing macros used to automate tasks in Engineering Equation Solver software. A macro is a set of instructions for automatating system operations. MicroEmacs, an extensible text editor for automating tasks on a computer also uses EMF files to store macros.

How to open EMF files

You need a suitable software like Office to open an EMF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EMF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EMF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

EMF file format:

If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the EMF files is as follows:

The EMF file extension is quite common and is primarily used by a single program. But the following two file formats are common:

The remaining 13% of all EMF files are files with no common format, the following 3 formats can be found: PNG. Sometimes used for unused, area, disk, plot, portafolio, diagram, picture, sample, schema, black, calif or order. You can get all the details of your EMF file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .emf file to view" above.

an emf image is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with EMF files

  • Associate the EMF file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open images. Because only the current version supports the latest EMF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Office update.
  • To make sure that your EMF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .EMF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
