What is an EMS file?

EMS files mostly belong to Autodesk Inventor.

EMS files are used by different software to store specific data. Their content depends on the application that created them.
For example, one common use is to hold machine drawing data for CAD systems. In this case, the file holds design information used by Autodesk Inventor, also known as an eMachineShop CAD design file.
Other uses include:

  • CAD Design: The file contains machine drawings used in Autodesk Inventor. More details can be found at the Autodesk Inventor overview.
  • CNC Setup: It can store data for CNC machine tool kinematics. Tools like Edgecam and CENIT Fastsuite Edition 2 utilize these files. Visit Edgecam information for more.
  • EPLAN Macros: Some files use an XML format to save macro data for electrical planning in EPLAN Electric P8. See EPLAN for further details.
  • Event Logging: Certain EMS files work as logs. They support systems like the Avaya EMS Server, and in the TIBCO environment they are used for enterprise messaging, sometimes also seen as a QlikView Event Message Service.
  • Email Storage: A few files are meant for storing email messages. They are used in programs like SpamAssassin and Emsisoft Anti-Malware. More info is available at the SpamAssassin website.

FilExt.com note: The data inside these files must be opened and interpreted by the corresponding software. Using the proper application is important for accessing the design, setup, log, or messaging information stored in an EMS file.

How to open EMS files

You need a suitable software like Autodesk Inventor to open an EMS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EMS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EMS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert EMS files:

  1. Autodesk Inventor
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. EMS files are often referred to as Autodesk Inventor cads because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. eMachineShop (CAD Design File) by eMachineShop
eMachineShop is a new way to get the custom parts you need; an on-line alternative to a machine shop. Download the free software, choose a machine or process, draw your part, and click to order. Your parts will be machined and delivered. This file format is classified as CAD/CAM. Related links: How to Convert .EMS Files

EMS format details:

If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. In the following you will find our evaluation of the EMS files:

The file type with the extension 'EMS' is used by different programs with different formats. But the following two file formats are common:

All other EMS files (54%) have different formats, such as XML and FORMAT. If you want to find out what your EMS file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with EMS files

  • Associate the EMS file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest EMS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Autodesk Inventor update.
  • To make sure that your EMS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .EMS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
