What is an ENS file?

ENS files mostly belong to EndNote by Clarivate. ENS is the extension for an EndNote style file. EndNote is a reference management software developed by Clarivate that allows maintaining and formatting bibliographies. The ENS file is a binary file that stores a citation style in EndNote. It determines the appearance and formatting of the citations and references in a document, and can include different rules, including punctuation, indentation, textual syntax, and alphabetization. EndNote includes its own citation styles and also allows users to create and save their own custom styles. The styles included with the software are stored in the Styles folder in the installation directory. Custom styles are stored outside the user's personal styles folder. To find the default file path for the personal styles folder, open EndNote and go to Preferences in Edit. Look at Folder locations in Preferences. EndNote styles are used to make ENL (EndNote Library) files that are syntactically-correct and conform to a specific citation standard.

How to open ENS files

You need a suitable software like EndNote to open an ENS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ENS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ENS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ENS file format:

To view or edit ENS files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the ENS files produces the following result:

ENS is a very commonly used file extension and is primarily used by a single program. The following file formats are most commonly found in ENS files:

All other ENS files (6%) have no uniform format, often e.g. KEnsemble. Tagged as vancouver, psych, journal, ieee, phys, chicago or science. Just click the "Choose your .ens file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your ENS file is.
