What is an EVTX file

EVTX files mostly belong to Event Viewer by Microsoft. An EVTX file is an event log generated by various services, processes, and programs on Windows operating system. It contains event data such as timestamps, process name, operation type, exit codes etc. saved as compressed XML data in the \Windows\System32\winevt\Logs folder. EVTX format was introduced in Windows Vista to be used alongside the EVT format used in older versions of Windows operating system. Event Viewer allows system administrators to view event logs saved in an EVTX file. EVTX is similar to EVT format.

How do you open EVTX files?

You need a suitable software like Event Viewer from Microsoft to open an EVTX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. EVTX file format:

To view or edit EVTX files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. • 95% of all EVTX files are Windows Event Log files. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are 51 KB to 51 KB in size, with a median of 51 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: Security.evtxUT. An example of a file name is Security.evtx.
