What is an EXA file?

EXA files mostly belong to FaceFX Studio. EXA files are not a single standard file type. They can be used in several contexts.

Game Resource Files: some are used with Mafia: Definitive Edition. They store game assets such as animations or character data. More details are available on the FaceFX Studio website.

Backup Files: Some EXA files are created by the EXABili program as backups.

Medical Data Files: some are Siemens ECG data files. These contain cardiac data used by CardioSoft and relate to devices like the Mortara ELI series. See more on the GE Healthcare website.

Compressed Project Files: some are ZIP archives that serve as project files for EXACT and Hager Group.

Executable Files: A small percentage are actually Windows executable files that have been renamed with the EXA extension.

How to open an EXA file

You need a suitable software like FaceFX Studio to open an EXA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EXA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EXA file directly in the browser:. EXA file format:

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the EXA files comes to the following conclusion:

EXA is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type is used by different programs with different formats. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 25% of all EXA files start with the magic bytes SCHl, which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. A typical file size is 27 KB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. SCCl, SCDl, GSTR, SCHl and SCHl$. An example of a file name is amb_gf_northbeach_01.exa or dx_1bby_mik1_1c01_lwd_15054.exa. Files like these are sometimes connected to northbeach, fightclub and bell.
• 15% of all EXA files start with the bytes BA 00 00 00 crucial for this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are often between 14 KB and 720 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: ------------, ------------ EXABili, --------------- www.exabilisim.com ---------------, = Veresiye 5, Program Ad, Yedek Saati, Yedek Tarihi and im Yedek Dosyas. The file name 2020-06-01.exa is characteristic of these files.
