Opening an FDL File
The FDL file type is primarily associated with 7-Zip.
What is an FDL file?
The FDL extension is used by different systems and contains various types of data. In one common case, an FDL file is a zipped archive that holds a Foundation Drilling Log with geotechnical information. You can extract the contents using a ZIP tool.
Other FDL files are formatted as Windows executables. These belong to a Forms Data Language system used by tools like FDLwin and may run reports.
Additional uses include:
- Epson printer firmware used to update printer functions. More details are available at Epson Support.
- John Deere log files stored as XML, which are used by service tools. Visit John Deere Operations Center for details.
- Feature Data Link files in UTF-16 (LE) format that provide GIS connection parameters for software like GeoMedia Professional. More info can be found at Hexagon Geospatial.
- Lighting Fixture Data files used in layout editors for CAST lighting designs.
FilExt.com tip: The internal format of an FDL file (ZIP, EXE, XML, or UTF-16 text) reveals its purpose. Verifying the file header is useful to decide which program you need to open it.
How to open FDL files
You need a suitable software like 7-Zip to open an FDL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FDL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FDL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

FDL file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our examination of the FDL files comes to the following conclusion:
FDL is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type includes various formats for various programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 35% of all FDL files are based on the zip format, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one FDL file. A typical number of included files is 22. File names inside are 1.png, AcqRecords.xml, Comments.xml, ConfigDLG.xml, Events.xml, Grouts.xml, Impri.xml, Log.txt, MODALARM.XML, Machines.xml, Pilots.xml, Prad.xml, Pumps.xml, Records.xml, Requetes.xml, SensorCalib.xml, Sensors.xml, Trucks.lst, UNITSMET.XML, Users.xml and mesures.bin. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. The files are often between 14 KB and 220 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: Events.xml. Such files sometimes refer to section and erson.
- 10% of all FDL files are based on the well-known EXE file format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. FDL files can be up to 640 KB in size, but are often around 6 KB - 370 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. This program must be run under Microsoft Windows.
All other FDL files (55%) have different formats, the following 6 formats can be found: XML, UTF-16 (LE), Library and IJSB. If you want to find out what your FDL file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with FDL files
- Associate the FDL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest FDL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available 7-Zip update.
- To make sure that your FDL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .FDL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
