What is an XFDL file?

XFDL files mostly belong to Forms Viewer by IBM. An XFDL file is a digital form written in Extensible Forms Description Language. XFDL is based on Extensible Markup Language. It defines the layout, form control, form validation, input constraints, and submission script for a single- or multi-page form. Any text editor may be used to create an XFDL form while Forms Viewer can be used to read, fill out, and/or sign the form. XFDL is mainly used to create and interchange digital forms between businesses and government agencies.

How to open an XFDL file

You need a suitable software like Forms Viewer to open an XFDL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XFDL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XFDL file directly in the browser:. An XFDL file mainly uses a special format. But the following two file formats are common:

• 90% of all XFDL files belong to XFDL form. These files contain text and words, not binary data. Most of these files are 27 KB to 280 KB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as H4sIAAAAAAAAC, application/vnd.xfdl;content-encoding="base64-gzip", application/vnd.xfdl; content-encoding="base64-gzip" and H4sIAAAAAAAAA. These files are attributed to award, form, counseling, checklist, statement, initial and tahunan, and often include person-related information.
• 10% of all XFDL files are XFDL form files, which are based on the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The files are on average 110 KB in size and range from 27 KB to 490 KB. The files contain the following words: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, xmlns:custom="http://www.ibm.com/xmlns/prod/XFDL/Custom" xmlns:designer="http://www.ibm.com/xmlns/prod/workp and <XFDL xmlns="http://www.ibm.com/xmlns/prod/XFDL/7.7". The following filename is common: form.xfdl.
