All about FIG Files
The FIG file type is primarily associated with Figma.
What is a FIG file?
How to open FIG files
You need a suitable software like Figma to open a FIG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FIG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FIG file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert FIG files:
- Figma by Figma
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. FIG files are often referred to as Figma vector images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- 3DS MAX (biped figure) by Autodesk3DS MAX is a professional 3D modeling, animation, and game graphics creation software. It uses FIG files to store figures containing the structure and anatomy of a biped model. All pose information, twist links, and geometric scale elements of a biped model are saved in a FIG file. This file format is classified as 3D Image. Related links: Saving and Loading FIG Files
- ATOS (data) by GOMATOS is a family of high-end 3D optical measurement machines used for quality control in various manufacturing applications. Some CAD data used by ATOS machines are saved in FIG files. This file format is classified as CAD.
- AVRIL (graphics data) by Bernie RoehlAVRIL (A Virtual Reality Interface Library) is a C library for creating and rendering 3D virtual worlds. Some graphics data used by AVRIL are saved in FIG files. This file format is classified as 3D Image.
- Cabri (figure) by CabrilogCabri 3D is a software for constructing and visualizing 2D and 3D geometric figures. Figures saved in FIG files can be opened with Cabri 3D. This file format is classified as Vector Image.
- DeskMate (drawing) by RadioShackDeskMate was an operating environment application software for the TRS-80 family of computers. Drawings created with DeskMate were stored in FIG files. This file format is classified as Vector Image.
- Geometry II Plus (figure) by CabrilogGeometry II Plus is an interactive notebook program used for geometric construction. Geometric figures created with Geometry II Plus are saved in FIG files. This file format is classified as Vector Image.
- Lahey FORTRAN (linker options) by LaheyLahey FORTRAN is an obsolete FORTRAN programming language compiler and development environment. The linker options used by Lahey FORTRAN are saved in FIG files. This file format is classified as Developer.
- LaTeX (drawing) by The LaTeX ProjectLaTeX is a document typesetting software and language for writing and publishing scientific/technical documentation. FIG drawings created with Xfig may be embedded in a LaTeX document after the drawing is converted to EPS format. This file format is classified as Vector Image.
- MATLAB (plot figure) by MathWorksMATLAB is a high-level programming language and development software for performing computationally intensive tasks faster than traditional programming languages can afford. It provides a suite of tools for numerical computation as well as 2D/3D data visualization. Plot figures used by MATLAB are stored in FIG files. This file format is classified as Data.
- Snes9X (game disc image) by Snes9X TeamSnes9X is a portable program that emulates the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It may be used to extract, install, and play video games designed for SNES. The ROM of a game cartridge extracted with Snes9X may be saved in FIG format. This file format is classified as Disk Image. - SWAT (configuration) by Grassland, Soil & Water Research LaboratorySWAT is short for Soil & Water Assessment Tool. It is a program for simulating, measuring, and predicting the impact of land management practices. The FIG file used by SWAT is a settings file that contains the objects in a watershed as well as the routing network. This file format is classified as Settings.
- WinFIG (drawing) by Andreas SchmidtWinFIG is a vector graphics editor for Windows, OS X, and Linux desktop operating systems. Drawings created with WinFIG are saved in FIG files. This file format is classified as Vector Image.
- XFig (drawing) by Xfig Development TeamXfig is an open-source vector graphics editor for UNIX-based environments. It saves drawings in FIG files. A FIG drawing is made up of lines (paths), arcs, shapes, text, objects, and color information. This file format is classified as Vector Image.
FIG file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below you will find our evaluation of the FIG files:
FIG is one of the most common file extensions and mainly uses a special format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 80% of all FIG files have the same signature fig-kiwi. They consist of unreadable binary data. A typical file size is 6 MB. The file type is a fairly new file format. The files contain the following words: fig-kiwi. These files are often associated with design, figma, page, website, landing, community, free and mobile.
- 15% of all FIG files store the data in the MATLAB file format. The MATLAB format is binary data container format and was developed by MathWorks MATLAB, an application used for mathematical computations such as analyzing data, developing algorithms, and building models. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are often between 14 KB and 1 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: Created on, MAT-file, Platform, 0 MAT-file, MATLAB 5 and PCWIN64, Created. These files can be linked to figure, plot, graph, matlab, output and image.
All the rest of the FIG files (5%) have different formats, often, for example, FIG vector drawing, Cabri 3D Figure, Mac2OSX, HTML, Portrait and FIL. Tagged as challenge, dashboard, template, food, icons or editable. If you want to find out what your FIG file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

a fig design is a special file format by Figma and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with FIG files
- Associate the FIG file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open designs. Because only the current version supports the latest FIG file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Figma manufacturer website after an available Figma update.
- To make sure that your FIG file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .FIG file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
