FIT file format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the FIT files is as follows:
The FIT file extension is very common and mainly uses a defined FIT format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 80% of all FIT files belong to Fitness tracker data. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are often between 390 bytes and 150 KB in size. The file type is relatively new. The files contain the following words: .FIT. Some examples of file names are 2020-06-01 10-30.fit. Files like these have the following tags: course, activity, wellness, records, totals, cycling, device and settings.
- 8% of all FIT files belong to Flexible Image Transport System bitmap. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The average file size is 8 MB with most files being between 610 KB and 48 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as SIMPLE = T / file does conform to FITS standard BITPIX = 16 / number of bits per data pixel NAXIS = 2 / number. These files are often associated with light, gain, single, bias, stack, calibrated, luminance and dark.
All other FIT files (12%) have no consistent format, the following 4 formats exist: Garmin Flexible and Interoperable data Transfer and FIT. The category is move, light, gain, bike, fitness, morning, lctns or trail. Just click the "Choose your .fit file to view this image" button on this page to find out what your FIT file is.
