What is a GBR file?

GBR files mostly belong to UcamX by Ucamco. A GBR file typically contains the schematic of an electronic component or a printed circuit board (PCB) design saved in Gerber file format. A GBR serves as a single container for a 2D representation of the copper layers, labels, solder masks, and well as drilling and routing instructions for SMD and NSMD components. It provides a simple and secure way to exchange printed circuit board data across many CAM programs and machines. The graphics data in Gerber files are saved as vector graphics and you may create, view, edit, and export GBR files with programs such as UcamX, Altium Designer, or GC-Prevue. GBR filename extension is also associated with the raster graphics file format used to store brush settings in GIMP graphics editor. This GBR file contains information such as the stroke, spacing, and description of a brush that can be reused across different projects in GIMP.

How to open a GBR file

You need a suitable software like UcamX to open a GBR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GBR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GBR file directly in the browser:. GBR format details:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the GBR files looks like this:

The GBR file extension is quite common and mainly uses a special format. The file formats most commonly found in GBR files are:

80% of all GBR files are associated with Gerber format. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The files are 460 bytes to 180 KB in size, with a median of 18 KB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. The following keywords are characteristic: FSLAX, Gerber and %MOMM*%. The following filename is common: copper_bottom.gbr. Such GBR files store data about bottom, copper, cadcam, board, mask, induction, heater and assembly.
5% of all GBR files belong to GIMP Brush. They consist of unreadable binary data. A typical file size is 47 KB. The keywords GIMP and GIMP Brush are typical for these files. Such files are related to tree and dots.

Update your software that should actually open pcb designs. Because only the current version supports the latest GBR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Ucamco manufacturer website after an available UcamX update.
