All about GCD Files
The GCD file type is primarily associated with Edge.
What is a GCD file?
How to open a GCD file
You need a suitable software like Edge to open a GCD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GCD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GCD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

GCD file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the GCD files is as follows:
The GCD file extension is not widely used. Such a file includes different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in GCD files:
- 35% of all GCD files are Garmin firmware update files. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. A typical file size is 11 MB. The file type is relatively new. The keywords Copyright, GARMINd, Garmin Ltd and or its subsidiaries are typical for these files. GUPDATE.GCD is a typical file name. These files are attributed to forerunner and edge.
- 15% of all GCD files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This Windows file format has features similar to those of a filesystem format with virtual files and subfolders. The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. Sections and streams in the file are named Audit Trail, File Comment, File Property, Report Format, AOC Instrument Parameters, Chromatogram Parameters, GC Batch Table, GC Batch Table Original, GC Configuration, GC Data Processing Original-1, GC Data Processing Original-2, GC Data Processing-1, GC Data Processing-2, GC Data Processing-3, GC QAQC Processing, GC QAQC Processing Original, GC Raw Data-1, GC Raw Data-2, GC Raw Data-3, GC Status Information and GC-X Instrument Parameters. GCD files can be up to 1 MB in size, but are often around 240 KB - 1 MB.
All other GCD files (50%) have no consistent format. You can get all the details of your GCD file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .gcd file to analyze" above.

How to solve problems with GCD files
- Associate the GCD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open firmware updates. Because only the current version supports the latest GCD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Garmin manufacturer website after an available Edge update.
- To make sure that your GCD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GCD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
