What is a GCD file?

GCD files mostly belong to Edge by Garmin. A GCD file is a class definition used by tools in the GNUe (GNU Enterprise) business environment. A class definition (GCD) contains methods, triggers, and schema information. GCD is also the filename extension of firmware updates used by Garmin GPS devices such as those in the Edge and Nuvi family. Another type of GCD file contains installation and activation data for a Windows program downloaded from Giveaway Of The Day website. Such GCD files are usually named Setup.gcd and Activate.gcd. They contain information used by the Setup.exe and Activate.exe executables in the downloaded program.

How to open a GCD file

You need a suitable software like Edge to open a GCD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. The keywords Copyright, GARMINd, Garmin Ltd and or its subsidiaries are typical for these files. GUPDATE.GCD is a typical file name. These files are attributed to forerunner and edge.
15% of all GCD files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This Windows file format has features similar to those of a filesystem format with virtual files and subfolders. The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. Sections and streams in the file are named Audit Trail, File Comment, File Property, Report Format, AOC Instrument Parameters, Chromatogram Parameters, GC Batch Table, GC Batch Table Original, GC Configuration, GC Data Processing Original-1, GC Data Processing Original-2, GC Data Processing-1, GC Data Processing-2, GC Data Processing-3, GC QAQC Processing, GC QAQC Processing Original, GC Raw Data-1, GC Raw Data-2, GC Raw Data-3, GC Status Information and GC-X Instrument Parameters. GCD files can be up to 1 MB in size, but are often around 240 KB - 1 MB.
