All about GEN Files
The GEN file type is primarily associated with Genesis.
What is a GEN file?
- Main Use: Sega Genesis, otherwise known as Sega Megadrive is a 16-bit video gaming device released in the late 1980s. Game ROM information of games that can be played on a Sega Genesis console is saved in a GEN file. The GEN file stores a copy of the game files from the original cartridge. Opening the GEN files with compatible emulators such as Kega Fusion, Gens+, HazeMD and Genesis Plus enables the user to play these games on a computer.
- Other Uses: GEN file extension is also used to denote data files exported using ArcView, a GIS software application meant for the visualization and analysis of geographic data. The GEN files used by ArcView consist of data linked with the ArcInfo E00 file. ArcView application is bundled as a part of the ESRI ArcGIS Desktop GIS software. GEN files are also used by Daqarta, a general-purpose data acquisition and real-time analysis system offered by Interstellar Research, to save extended audio data. GEN files are also used to save generic driver configuration data associated with the chromatography software Chromeleon. GEN files are also used to store compiled templates used by dBASE, a database management application.
How to open a GEN file
You need a suitable software like Genesis to open a GEN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GEN file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GEN file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert GEN files:
- Genesis by Sega
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. GEN files are often referred to as Genesis games because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- ArcGIS (data file) by EsriArcGIS is a geographic information system (GIS) for working with geographic information, where it is primarily used for creating/using maps, compiling geographic data, managing geographic information within a database, and many more uses. The GEN file stores data used by this application. This file format is classified as Data.
- Chromeleon (generic driver configuration file) by ThermoFisherChromeleon is a program developed by Dionex, owned by ThermoFisher. The program is used in chromatography. GEN files are used by Chromeleon for storing generic driver configurations. This file format is classified as Settings. Related links: Dionex
- Daqarta (extended audio data file) by Interstellar ResearchDaqarta uses your Windows sound card to provide high performance waveform and FFT spectrum analysis, color spectrograms, signal averaging, signal generation, and advanced options for lab or personal use. You can open saved files, including standard WAV files collected elsewhere, to analyze waveform, spectrum, or spectrogram displays of file data. Even many unsupported formats can be opened via manual selection of format parameters. GEN files are used by Daqarta for storing extended audio data. This file format is classified as Audio.
- dBASE (compiled template file) by dataBased IntelligencedBASE is a program developed by dataBased Intelligence for the development of application databases. The program uses GEN files to store compiled templates. This file format is classified as Data.
- Generations Plus (design file) by Generations Embroidery SystemsGenerations Plus is an embroidery program developed by Generations Embroidery Systems. Embroidery designs are stored using the GEN file extension. This file format is classified as Page Layout.
- Genius Family Tree Data
- GenStat (command data file) by VSNiGenStat is a statistical data analysis program developed by VSNi for the Microsoft Windows operating system. The program uses GEN files to store command data. This file format is classified as Data.
- ToGenBank Format
- Ventura (generated text data file) by Corel CorporationVentura is obsolete and no longer supported by Corel Corporation. It has been replaced by an alternative within another product from the same company, CorelDRAW. GEN files were used by Ventura to store generated text data. This file format is classified as Data.
GEN file extension format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our examination of the GEN files comes to the following conclusion:
GEN is a very widely used file extension. The file type covers different formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 40% of all GEN files start with the magic bytes WRS4, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. GEN files are between 540 KB and 36 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. WRS4 and DDS !. Some examples of file names are 2019.gen or battlepass.gen. Such files are related to weap, maps, model, texture, doku, panel, char, workshop, anzu and lang.
- 7% of all GEN files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "FF FF" at the beginning. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 20 bytes with most files being between 20 bytes and 2 MB in size. The file name segments.gen is characteristic of these files. These files are often associated with abxd.
All the rest of the GEN files (53%) have different formats, often, for example, JPG, GEN, TAPE, Gene, GROUND, GENPTV, PHU and Game. Files like these are sometimes linked to sonic, genius, game, stream, level, animation, dictfile, geometry, spinner, static, update, mario, super, video or bros. a gen game ROM file is a special file format by Sega and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with GEN files
- Associate the GEN file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open game rom files. Because only the current version supports the latest GEN file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Sega manufacturer website after an available Genesis update.
- To make sure that your GEN file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GEN file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
