What is a GID file?
How to open GID files
You need a suitable software like Windows to open a GID file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GID file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GID file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

- GiD (project data file) by CIMNEGiD is a universal, adaptative, and user-friendly pre/post-processing system developed by CIMNE (The International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering) for computer analysis in science and engineering. It provides an interactive graphical user interface for defining, preparing, and visualizing data related to numerical simulations. The GID file is a project data file. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: User Manual, FAQ, Forum
GID file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the GID files:
GID is not a commonly used file extension and mainly uses a defined GID format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 85% of all GID files are GID Help index files. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 8 KB in size and range from 8 KB to 30 KB. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. !FILES, !Flags, !KWBTREE, !KWMAP and !Pete. Files like these have the following tags: grammar, russian and help.
All the rest of the GID files (15%) have different formats. Just click the "Choose your .gid file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your GID file is.
Technical Data for GID File Extension
a gid global index file is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with GID files
- Associate the GID file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open global index files. Because only the current version supports the latest GID file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Windows update.
- To make sure that your GID file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
