What is a GID file?

GID files mostly belong to Windows by Microsoft. GID stands for Global Index. The GID file extension is associated with a Windows Help Global Index file. The file stores an index that is created when a user requests a full text search in WinHelp. WinHelp is an older help platform for Windows that was discontinued with Windows Vista. Search indexes speed up search results and allow faster access to help documentation. GID files can be safely deleted, but they are recreated by WinHelp. By default, GID files are hidden in Windows Explorer. Help topics in WinHelp are stored in HLP files, and other file formats related to the help documentation include HPJ, CNT, FTS, and FTG.

How to open GID files

You need a suitable software like Windows to open a GID file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GID file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GID file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

  2. GiD (project data file) by CIMNE
GiD is a universal, adaptative, and user-friendly pre/post-processing system developed by CIMNE (The International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering) for computer analysis in science and engineering. It provides an interactive graphical user interface for defining, preparing, and visualizing data related to numerical simulations. The GID file is a project data file. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: User Manual, FAQ, Forum

GID file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the GID files:

GID is not a commonly used file extension and mainly uses a defined GID format. But the following two file formats are common:

All the rest of the GID files (15%) have different formats. Just click the "Choose your .gid file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your GID file is.

How to solve problems with GID files

  • Associate the GID file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open global index files. Because only the current version supports the latest GID file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Windows update.
  • To make sure that your GID file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
