Opening a GMS File
The GMS file type is primarily associated with CorelDRAW.
What is a GMS file?
For example, one common use is as a CorelDRAW macro file. These files contain code that automates tasks inside CorelDRAW.
Other GMS files are map files used in game projects. In this form they store level data for games such as those made with Game Maker Studio. You can check details on these at the Steam Community.
There is also a group of GMS files that hold source code for the GAMS system. In these files the mathematical programming language is used to write models for optimization and system analysis. More information can be found on the GAMS website.
Other instances include game save files for titles like Game Dev Tycoon and files used in a Graphics Management System for groundwater or engineering modeling (Aquaveo).
FilExt.com note: Each GMS file must be opened with its own native software. A CorelDRAW macro cannot be opened in GAMS and vice versa. Identifying the file type may be possible by checking its header or using a plain text editor to see if it contains clear scripting code.
How to open GMS files
You need a suitable software like CorelDRAW to open a GMS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GMS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GMS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert GMS files:
- CorelDRAW
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. GMS files are often referred to as CorelDRAW developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Corel Global Macro File
- Corel Graphics10 Draw File
GMS file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. In the following you will find our evaluation of the GMS files:
Files with the GMS extension are quite widely used. This file type includes various formats for various programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 60% of all GMS files have the same signature GMS. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. GMS files are between 17 KB and 580 KB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Such GMS files store data about grafisin, wizard, corel, draw, collections, merger, psdto and auto.
- 5% of all GMS files start with the magic bytes set, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The file size is in the range of 330 bytes to 2 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as sets, parameters, variable, positive variables and table. Files like these have the following tags: dacota and model.
All other GMS files (35%) have no uniform format, such as .NET, Set, title and GAME. Files like these are sometimes linked to constructor, converter, calendar, global, idcard, macros or save. If you want to find out what your GMS file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

a gms script file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with GMS files
- Associate the GMS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open script files. Because only the current version supports the latest GMS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available CorelDRAW update.
- To make sure that your GMS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .GMS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
