What is a GMS file?

GMS files mostly belong to CorelDRAW. A GMS file is not a single standard type but a file extension shared among different applications.
For example, one common use is as a CorelDRAW macro file. These files contain code that automates tasks inside CorelDRAW.
Other GMS files are map files used in game projects. In this form they store level data for games such as those made with Game Maker Studio. You can check details on these at the Steam Community.
There is also a group of GMS files that hold source code for the GAMS system. In these files the mathematical programming language is used to write models for optimization and system analysis. More information can be found on the GAMS website.
Other instances include game save files for titles like Game Dev Tycoon and files used in a Graphics Management System for groundwater or engineering modeling (Aquaveo).
FilExt.com note: Each GMS file must be opened with its own native software. A CorelDRAW macro cannot be opened in GAMS and vice versa. Identifying the file type may be possible by checking its header or using a plain text editor to see if it contains clear scripting code.

How to open GMS files

You need a suitable software like CorelDRAW to open a GMS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GMS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GMS file directly in the browser:. GMS file format:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Files with the GMS extension are quite widely used. This file type includes various formats for various programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 60% of all GMS files have the same signature GMS. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. GMS files are between 17 KB and 580 KB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Such GMS files store data about grafisin, wizard, corel, draw, collections, merger, psdto and auto.
• 5% of all GMS files start with the magic bytes set, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The file size is in the range of 330 bytes to 2 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as sets, parameters, variable, positive variables and table. Files like these have the following tags: dacota and model.
