What is a GPG file?

GPG files mostly belong to GNU Privacy Guard by Free Software Foundation, Inc. A GPG file is a private or public keyring generated by GNU Privacy Guard (GPG) and used to encrypt/decrypt files or messages. A keyring is a collection of encryption keys (and passwords). GPG also uses a GPG file to save an encrypted message or a signed document to prevent authorized access or modification. GPG (GNU Privacy Guard) is available as a command line software package for Windows, Linux, macOS, and RISC operating system. It is an open source software released as a replacement for the proprietary Pretty Good Privacy cryptography software distributed by NortonLifeLock.

How to open GPG files

You need a suitable software like GNU Privacy Guard from Free Software Foundation, Inc. to open a GPG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
