What is a GPD file?

GPD files mostly belong to Windows by Microsoft. GPD is a lossless raster image file format used by PhotoDefiner. Files saved in this format have GPD filename extension and a compression ratio similar to PNG and GIF files. You can open GPD images with QuickTime if you've installed the PhotoDefiner component. GPD is also the filename extension of generic driver description files used to create Unidrv minidrivers for printers compatible with Windows operating system. These GPD files contain printer attributes such as the default orientation, commands, and version, which are written in the text-based Generic Printer Driver Description (GPD) language. The StdNames.gpd and TtfSub.gpd files contain driver support data. Xbox 360 video game console saves a player's profile data (including preferences, gameplay history, high scores etc.) in a GPD file. Civil 3D, a CAD software saves TR-55 graphical peak discharge data in GPD files.

How can I open a GPD file?

You need a suitable software like Windows to open a GPD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GPD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GPD file directly in the browser:. QuickTime is a cross-platform, extensible multimedia player and converter. Installing the PhotoDefiner component of this program allows you to view images stored in GPD file format. This file format is classified as Raster Image.

Xbox is a series of video game consoles with gaming, streaming, and media playback support. It saves a player's profile data in a GPD file containing information such as games played, progress, high scores etc. This file format is classified as Game.

GPD file extension format:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. An GPD file includes different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:

50% of all GPD files are associated with Generic Printer Description - Unidrv minidriver. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are on average 17 KB in size and range from 8 KB to 42 KB. The file type is old but is used even today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. *GPDSpecVersion: "1.0", *GPDFileVersion: "1.0", GPDFileName, *Include: "StdNames.gpd", MasterUnits, PAIR, ResourceDLL, *%%% Copyright (c) 1997-1999 Microsoft Corporation, *CodePage: 1252, *IsXPSDriver?: TRUE, *ModelName: "PrintDeviceCapabilities GPD" and *PrinterType: PAGE. The file name 69b8a4a.gpd is characteristic of these files. These files are attributed to ebsd.
15% of all GPD files are Xbox Game Profile Data files. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are on average 45 KB in size and range from 25 KB to 320 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. XDBF. The file name FFFE07D1.gpd or 4A5707D3.gpd is characteristic of these files. Such GPD files store data about fffe.
