What is a GSF file?

GSF files mostly belong to Various. GSF files are data files used by different software with specific purposes. They are not one standard format but a shared extension for files that can hold game data or other specialized information.

Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the GSF files produces the following result:

An GSF file includes various formats for various programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 30% of all GSF files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "00 00 FF" at the beginning. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. A typical file size is 240 KB. The file type is old but is used even today. The files contain the following words: JFIF, 8BIM and Photoshop 3.0. A common filename is Itemscript.gsf or SkillScript.gsf. Such GSF files store data about chemical, monster, proto and type.
• 6% of all GSF files start with the bytes Gwyddion Simple Field 1.0 crucial for this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. The average file size is 260 KB with most files being between 40 KB and 490 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: Gwyddion Simple Field 1.0, XRes, YRes, XOffset, XReal, YOffset, Neaspec_Runs=1, Neaspec_ZRes=1, YReal, Neaspec_MOffset=0 and YResIncomplete.

The remaining 64% of all GSF files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. Grand Smeta data, Gameboy Sound Format, config, GSF and gsfm.
