What is a GXD file?

GXD files mostly belong to General CADD Pro. GXD files serve two distinct roles.
For one type, these files store General CADD drawings used in computer aided design. They are compressed using the GZIP algorithm.

This variant holds vector-based drawing data.

Another use of the GXD extension is for Caliper LabChip data.

This type contains lab instrument measurements and assay data.

How to open GXD files

You need a suitable software like General CADD Pro to open a GXD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GXD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GXD file directly in the browser:. GXD file format:

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the GXD files:

GXD is rarely used as a file extension and is used by different programs with different formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in GXD files:

• 50% of all GXD files are General CADD Pro files, which are using the popular GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The average file size is 99 KB with most files being between 8 KB and 470 KB in size. The file type is old but is used even today. The following keywords are characteristic: Created with General CADD for Windows and gxd.
• 35% of all GXD files save the data in .NET file format. The .NET format is used to save Microsoft .NET Framework objects to a file (ex. save game state as file) via object serialization. Such a .NET object may contain functions and data like settings, images or videos. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are 750 KB to 7 MB in size, with a median of 3 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null, Version, False, DDataModule and HLC90DataModule. The file name Labchip_2020-06-01 10-30.gxd is characteristic of these files. Such files sometimes refer to cdna.
